Adlerian Theory is the most effective in describing personality in a contemporary setting. It can in fact be used in almost any setting or time throughout history. Alfred Adler theorized that people and their development were based on societal norms and acceptance. The fact that he included that societal influence was key to people's development, it is easy to take this theory and use it in every generation. This could account for the differences in behaviors regionally where people in Northern states have different values and traditions than people in the deep South. The social interests and behaviors in these areas are different and they influence how people develop. His personality types can be seen in almost every "work" setting. Getting or Leaning people seem to struggle through work and stress when any changes happen. Avoiding people always wanting to play it safe and stick with the known commodities, they tend to shy away from change or trying anything new out of fear of failure. Ruling or Dominant people are power hungry and manipulative, they will do or say anything to get ahead and do not care about others. Finally, Socially Useful people are many people who are outgoing and try to make changes for good. This desire to overcome perceived shortcomings or to be accepted in society can easily be observed in any schoolyard across America and on social media daily. People behaving in ways to gain the approval of others and not because of any internal desire to act that way. You hear people talking about others compensating for their limits by doing something else in an over-the-top manner. This need for approval and acceptance in order to be successful and happy can easily explain social media trends, fad diets, popular clothing or music as well as many other "popular" things.
