-There are a number of methods to recruit new employees from outside the company. The five most commonly used are advertisements, unsolicited applications and resumes, Internet recruiting, employee referrals and employment agencies. Of these five sources, which would you choose to utilize if you were an HR recruiter looking for an assembly employee in the field in which you are now majoring, where would you look for a job? Why? Have you ever used any of these methods to look for a job before? What was the outcome?
-There are many different formats that can be used to deliver job training. If you were designing a program for customer service training, which format would you select for delivery, and why? How about for a new computer program or training for workplace safety issues? Which format do you find is most effective for you-on-line or in-person training? Share a time when you were training in the workplace - was it worth your time? why or why not?
-Describe a time when you, or someone you know, received an annual evaluation appraisal. How did the supervisor approach the meeting? Did you feel it was a fair assessment of your performance? Did you have an opportunity to discuss the review and give input, or was it a "done deal" when presented to you? Did you change your behavior as a result? If you have been the person delivering a review under the same circumstances to someone else, what would you do differently? What would you do the same way? In general, do you believe there is value in a well-devised, well-administered performance appraisal program?
-Do you believe that pay-for performance plans would be effective for motivating increases in performance for front-line employees like customer service reps? How about assembly workers and IT technicians? Have you (or someone you know) ever worked for a company that utilized a pay-for-performance plan? If so, did it affect your performance, or that of your co-workers? Would you like to work under such a plan?
