Assignment:
As you have learned from your other papers, the Earth is a system and an EVENT, in this case, the decline in the bee populations around the world has an impact on the Earth's spheres. Your paper should investigate the cause-and-effect relationship (INTERACTION) between the four spheres as a result of this EVENT. NASA is studying this impact and its relationship with the Earth's Systems.
Essential Question: What effect is the decline in managed (domestic) and wild bee populations around the world having on the environment? Is Colony Collapse Disorder the only issue contributing to this decline?
Your ESS analysis should include a description of the impacts and interactions between and among the four spheres due to the reduction of bee populations around the world.
- You should provide at least two interactions from each sphere, as well as include information on how NASA's involvement is helping with the research.
- Think about the cause and effect of bee populations on ecosystems, environmental impacts, human impacts economic impacts, as well as, impacts on CO2 levels.
- Discuss how NASA is studying or has studied this issue.
Points to include in your paper:
Introduction to the effect of the decline of managed and wild bee populations. Describe the issue and how it relates to the environment.
Why should we be concerned about the decline in bee populations? Provides supporting research addressing the following. These do not have to be long paragraphs; just answer the impact and provide support for your statements.
- CO2 Levels
- the environment (including ecosystems)
- humans
- the economy
3. Provide at least three causes for domestic and wild bee populations to decline with supporting evidence. Make sure you address the following in your answers.
- Use evidence from research or data to back your statements.
- Have the causes accelerated, or have they been consistent over time?
- Man-made, nature, or a combination of both?
4. Provide evidence of how and why the decline in bee populations is affecting each sphere. Explaining the cause/effect between the spheres. Your list of Earth Systems interactions (E>S, etc.) and their results or you may draw a diagram. Information from this paper can be incorporated into this section. Two examples per sphere are required.
- Lithosphere
- Atmosphere
- Biosphere
- Hydrosphere
5. Conclusion- Discusses the impacts and interactions between the event and the environment as well as the interactions between the spheres.
