Introduction:

Assignment:

First Part:

Let's use the Discussion Board this week to help each other find a possible topic to focus on in writing your third essay, an argument. Be sure to read all that our textbook has to say about the type of arguments you will be asked to write. In particular, focus on the section "Inquiry Arguments Begin with Exploration," on pages 218-219, and review the section "Features of the Form," on page 215.

Join in the Discussion Board by posting separate threads for each of the prompts below:

  1. First of all, ask questions about what is "true." What are you authentically confused about? What claims do you wish someone would research and determine once and for all if they are true or not? (For example: is it true that marijuana is bad for you?) Ask at least four (4) questions about what is true and please make each question about a different topic.
  2. Then post again to raise questions about how we should label or define certain ideas or actions. (For example, is spanking really a form of child abuse?) Ask at least four (4) questions about labelling or defining ideas or actions and please make each question about a different topic.
  3. Then post again to ask about what might be the cause or the effect of particular ideas or actions or policies. (For example, is building a wall on the border with Mexico really an effective way to reduce illegal immigration?) Ask at least four (4) questions about cause and effect and please make each question about a different topic.

Second Part:

Now it's time to engage with what others have posted:

  1. Read what others have posted and see if any new ideas for possible questions are inspired by what others have posted.
  2. Next, start offering some suggestions for possible answers to any of the questions that have been mentioned by at least two classmates. What answers have you heard offered for some of the questions? You don't have to address every question raised. Focus on those questions for which you've heard answers. You don't have to agree entirely (or at all) with the answers you offer, but whatever answers you offer should seem worth serious consideration.
  3. Finally, identify which of the questions from the class discussions that you think have the most potential for being the basis for a successful argument essay. Explain why.
