Assessment Task 1: Literature Review
Assessment Task 1 Description 2,000 words
In the first task students are to submit a written assignment in the form of a literature review. The purpose of this task is to define and contextualize an education issue or a problem and to demonstrate working knowledge and critical engagement of relevant literature related to a particular field of inquiry.
The submitted task must:
• Identify a specific education problem/issue (a succinct statement of what your study is about)
• Provide contextual background for the reader (e.g. why this problem/issue is important for you)
• Critically review relevant theoretical and research literature related to the problem/issue.
• Define key specialist terms (both conceptual and operational definitions)
Assessment Criteria
1. Identify a research problem/issue and researcher context (including personal, social and/or political factors); and the significance of the problem/issue.
2. Critically evaluate and synthesise relevant literature and identify issues pertinent to the topic.
3. Demonstrate effective written communication according to academic conventions (including word length, structure, written expression and referencing).
Before you explore our resources and advice, have a look at the assessment briefs. Once you have read through the details of this assessment task and viewed the rubric, you will be in a position to plan for this task. To help you further, we have asked the academic staff to outline this assessment for you in a video format. This recording can be viewed as an augmentation to the Assessment Task 1: Literature Review assessment brief. We trust that some ideas, instructions or concepts will become much clearer for you when watch as well as read.
Some important points that were discussed and will be worth your consideration are:
• How can you tell a 'good story' of your proposed research project by referring to the relevant literature?
• What can you do to ensure your selected literature is up-to-date and relevant to your project aims?
Assessment task 1: Literature review
We recommend that a good place to start in this assessment task is the development of a concept map. Your concept map is a living document and should reflect the evolving organisation of your ideas as you engage deeper with the unit materials and your own readings in relation to your research topic. Starting the concept mapping process in this unit will also help you with the next research pathway unit and the final writing up of a research paper or minor thesis.
Assessment Task 2 3,000 words
In the second task are required to submit a written assignment that outlines a potential research plan. For this assignment students are asked to identify a current educational issue or problem that requires research to identify appropriate solutions. Students are to develop and present a research plan to address the issue or problem including a justification of the questions, methods and data that will be used.
The submitted paper should include:
• A brief introduction, setting out the specific education problem and ideally summarize the argument in the paper submitted for Assignment 1.
• Describe the issue and its significance. Why is it important? Why is research needed to address the issue or question?
• Outline a research design to respond to this issue including:
- the aims of the research, specific research questions,
- methodology and the data (type, availability and collection) you will use to address these questions
- the identification of the participants of the study, the sample size (if applicable) the method of recruitment (if applicable), how access to the study site(s) will be negotiated
- and how findings will be analysed.
• Provide a justification for each of these components including the type of data, in relation to the overall aims of the research.
1. Identify and formulate a research question(s) that addresses a research problem, and justify the significance of the problem by summarising relevant literature.
2. Develop and justify an appropriate research design addressing the research question(s), including details on how data will be collected and analysed, and ethical considerations.
3. Demonstrate effective written communication according to academic conventions (including word length, structure, written expression and referencing).
