Question: When you think of long-standing educational philosophies of teaching and learning, you think about Perennialism, Behaviorism, etc. but these philosophies do not differ much from the more modern educational philosophies. I say that because these philosophies are still the foundation of modern education as it stands today. All that we know about these philosophies are at the helm of educators today. Dewey emphasized education should be child-centered (Siegel, H. 2024). This still poses true as we fast-forward to modern educational philosophies. Most curriculums are student-centered with an emphasis on assessments, but how the child gets to that goal is based on how they are met holistically in the classroom. Dewey's experiential learning philosophy has shaped most of what teachers still do today in terms of having students learn through experience. Activating prior knowledge is one of the ways teachers can meet students where they are academically.
