Assessment information - Choose four of the following six tasks. You should write approximately 750 words for each task.

List of tasks (choose four):

1. Phonetics and phonology

2. Lexis

3. Grammar

4. Pragmatics

5. Spoken discourse OR written discourse

6. Register and genre

Task 1: Phonetics & phonology

1. Produce a phonetic transcription of the following dialogue, assuming both speakers speak RP but are speaking in a casual style. [Note: the transcription does not contribute to the word count].

2. Identify three words in the dialogue for which a phoneme could be pronounced by a choice of more than one allophone (i.e. there is more than one way to produce the sound). For each phoneme, identify the possible allophones and explain why more than one pronunciation is possible, using one or more of these factors:

a. Complementary distribution & free variation

b. Word stress

c. Connected speech

3. Specify a group of L2 English learners from a particular L1 background and identify two aspects of pronunciation (i.e. phonemic variation, connected speech, stress or intonation) that might cause them difficulty when speaking this dialogue. Explain why these aspects might be problematic.

Task 2: Lexis

Discuss the following notions using examples from the text below:

paradigmatic relations
syntagmatic relations (also known as collocation)
metaphor

Task 3: Grammar

1. Identify the word classes, phrases and grammatical relations in the following sentences, using the terminology introduced in the lecture on grammar. [Note: this part of the task does not contribute to the word count].

Task 4: Pragmatics

Discuss Speech Act Theory and Politeness Theory giving examples from all of the following three extracts of natural speech. You do not have to comment on the whole of the texts, i.e. you should not analyse each text line by line but do use examples from all three texts.

Task 5: Discourse

Please choose ONE of the following discourse tasks (either spoken or written discourse).

OPTION A: Spoken discourse

Describe some of the characteristics of spoken discourse using examples from the following spoken texts. Note that you may not find examples of every characteristic discussed in class. To help your analysis, you may also discuss the absence of typical features of written discourse.

OPTION B: Written discourse

Read the following text from the Guardian newspaper and:

- Identify any culturally popular patterns of text organization.

- Give examples of clause relations, including matching relations and logical sequences.

To help your analysis, you may also discuss the absence of typical features of spoken discourse. Paragraph numbers have been inserted for ease of reference.

Task 6: Register and genre

Discuss and compare the following two texts in terms of the frameworks of:

- register

- genre

Word Count: 3000. Choose 4 topics from given 6. 750 words for each topic, 4 topics, 3000 words in total. Reference: Harvard, at least 5 references for each topic. The assignment - 6 questions (one for each topic). Choose 4 out of the 6, and submit your responses as an academic report. Word limit = 3,000 words = roughly 750 words for each topic. Note: part 1 of the phonetics task does not count towards the word limit i.e. you have 750 words to answer parts 2 and 3!. Note: part 1 of the grammar task does not count towards the word limit i.e. you have 750 words to answer parts 2 and 3! part 3 of the grammar task – compare English grammar to any other language of your choosing (with references to literature).
