Assessment Task 1: Socratic Seminar
A brief statement of the purpose of the task and how it relates to the key learning outcomes;
In this task PSTs will demonstrate their understanding of historical and contemporary arguments about the purposes of education and schooling, including a focus on inclusivity, disadvantage, social justice and democracy. They will also put forward teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.
A brief description of what students are being asked to do to fulfill the requirements for completion of the task;
PSTs will participate in a Socratic seminar including around 6 PSTs. The seminar is a formal discussion where PSTs discuss and pose open-ended questions related to the purposes of education/schooling and issues related to democracy, inclusion, social justice and inclusivity. PSTs prepare for the discussion by reading selected texts and by formulating key questions for discussion. PSTs will also come to the seminar with knowledge they can share about teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. Participants will record notes related to the assessment criteria that will be used to offer timely feedback at the conclusion of the seminar. Online students will participate in a seminar by reviewing and participating in discussion forums. Seminars should run for 20-25 minutes.
You will upload to Moodle the following accompanying work:
1. The text that has informed your discussion.
2. A document that has your plan for the discussion and which includes: the questions you will pose; the teaching strategies you will suggest; and a 500 word summary of your ideas about this topic which includes a consideration of the historical and contemporary arguments/ a consideration of the views of different stakeholders and exploration of the issues.
A clear statement of the criteria that will be used to grade the task;
Understanding of historical and contemporary arguments about the multiple purposes of education.
Understanding of different stakeholder perspectives about the purposes of education including students, parents, educators, employers and politicians. Critical exploration of issues related to democracy, social justice, inclusivity and disadvantage in education.
Examples of classroom teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. .
Use of research to support and justify viewpoints.
Use of open and provocative questions to challenge others. Thoughtful responses to questions posed by other participants.
A clear description of who will be the assessor (ie peer review, self-reflection, tutor, lecturer etc);
PSTs' participation in the seminar will be assessed by the lecturer for the course who will use and incorporate the written feedback of observers to assess PSTs againstthe criteria.
A clear statement of the weighting of each criteria used in the judgement process of the task;
Each criterion will be equally weighted.
An indication of the approximate amount of time students should devote to the task;
PSTs should spend approximately two hours of independent study per week reading and preparing for this task
Assessment Task 2: Report and Round Table Conference
A brief statement of the purpose of the task and how it relates to the key learning outcomes;
In this task PSTs will develop a research question related to the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, conduct research and present findings as well as implications for teaching strategies, at a round table discussion where protocols are used to enable inclusivity.
A brief description of what students are being asked to do to fulfill the requirements for completion of the task;
Students will formulate a question related to the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. With this question as a focus students will review research, websites, professional literature and write a report of findings.
