Examining Gender Role Stereotyping
Purpose: To examine the packaging of toys and television commercials for evidence of gender role stereotyping.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Visit a local toy store or the toy section in a department store. Evaluate 18 differ- ent children's toys and how they are packaged. On record sheet 1 on page 3, enter each toy's name, its category (sedentary game, construction toy, etc.), the key word or phrase used by the manufacturer to market the toy (e.g., "just like Mom's"), whether boys or girls are pictured on the package, and the children's approximate ages.
QUESTIONS
1. Consider the toy categories you observed in both the stores and the commercials. Do you find a tendency for girls to be shown with toys related to a domestic role or to mothering, whereas boys are shown with toys related to action careers? On what do you base your answer? If you find this tendency, do you believe it serves a useful purpose? How do you believe it influences boys and girls to choose certain careers?
2. If you examined any sport-related toys, were boys or girls pictured? Cite examples. Did the type of sport make a difference? How?
3. Consider the toy categories again. Was there a tendency for either sex to be associ- ated with games or toys for sedentary play? For active play? Cite examples. What implications might these tendencies have for the skill development and physical fitness of children?
4. What other differences did you observe in how specific types of toys were marketed to subgroups of children (based, for instance, on sex, age, or cultural group)?
5. On the basis of your observations in this lab, do you believe that toys are a part of the socialization process-especially socialization into gender roles? On what findings do you base your answer?
