El Greco was known as a great painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. The nickname "El Greco" refers to his Greek origin and Spanish citizenship. With his own expressionistic, El Greco focuses on representing emotion for figures on artwork. The artwork "Penitent Saint Peter" was drawn by El Greco, Ca 1590-1596, oil on canvas. The painting depicts the Repentant Saint Peter, distraught at having denied that he knew Christ when questioned on the eve of crucifixion. By special methods and elements, artist focused on his facial expression, especially his sad eyes with tear drops, in order to show his emotions and soul. His posture is praying and looking on the heaven. The scene in the background at left shows Mary Magdalene running to tell Saint Peter about the news of Christ's resurrection which she had just received from angel. The artwork "Penitent Saint Peter" conveys the isolation, sadness, and hopelessness.

To success in expressing emotions of "Penitent Saint Peter" artwork, the artist used main element as focal point. When viewer's first look at the artwork, they will immediately be caught by the most impressive figure: Saint Peter, because he has biggest proportion, being isolated, standing alone, and crying. Following the arrest of Jesus, Peter denied knowing him three times, but after the third denial, heard the rooster crow, Peter remembered to Christ's prediction, he cried bitterly. That is the reason why in the artwork, Peter's eyes show repentance and isolation. He is not only emphasized on facial expression, but also on his posture. Peter looks on the heaven, praying for forgiveness. His arms, hands are visible, painted in same colors with face and neck, in order to draw viewer's attention at the same time. Particularly, his hands are drawn closely to his heart in a sincere way, viewers can easily feel the hurt and sadness expand out from the artwork.

Beside focal point, another tool helps express Peter's emotions is using value, especially in tints and shades, which is the mixture of colors to increase or reduce lightness. Yellow on his clothing brings the warmth, which associates with passion. However, this is not a bright yellow which shows happiness or coziness, this is a dark yellow which is mixed with black and dark colors; moreover, the use of blue green which is cold color conveys sadness. Mixing warm and cold color together creates depth for picture. Also, artist used the white light from the heaven to brighten Peter's face and clothing, make Peter's facial expression be more focused.

El Greco said "I hold the imitation of color to be the greatest difficulty of art." He regarded color as the most important and ungovernable element in his painting. Indeed, EL Greco demonstrated it by using colors skillfully in this artwork to emphasis Peter. The analogous colors such as yellow, green, blue are used on clothing of Peter, which creates unity and harmonies that steer viewers toward his emotion. Also, El Greco used complementary colors to make Peter more standing out, yellow, green, and gray on black background. Artist emphasized Peter by using contrast colors together. His tear drops are the most standing out element helped explaining the story behind it.
