Question

Firstly, the extraction and processing of oil from these sands is very expensive. This is because the oil is mixed with sand and clay, and separating it requires a lot of energy and water, making it more costly than conventional oil extraction. Secondly, the process is also environmentally damaging. It leads to deforestation and habitat destruction, as large areas of land need to be cleared for the extraction process. It also results in significant greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change. Lastly, in the case of Canada, the pipeline that transports the oil runs through the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the world's largest underground sources of fresh water. There are concerns that a leak or spill could contaminate this important water source. Therefore, the economic and environmental costs associated with oil sands make them a controversial source of energy.
