Michael Brant Shermer is an American science writer, historian of science, and founder of The Skeptics Society. Shermer is a skeptic who debunks myths, superstitions and urban legends, and explains why people believe in them. He devoted most of his time to investigating pseudoscientific and supernatural claims. Shermer also engages in debates on topics pertaining to pseudoscience and religion in which he emphasizes scientific skepticism( is the practice of questioning whether claims are supported by empirical research and have ability of an entire experiment or study to be reproduced either by the researcher or by someone else working independently. It is one of the main principles of the scientific method and relies on ceteribus paribus., as part of a methodological norm pursuing "the extension of certified knowledge").
Shermer is also a speaker, who talks to audience about why people believe weird things. In the video “Why people believe weird things”, Shermer, talks about Why do people see the Virgin Mary on a cheese sandwich or hear demonic lyrics in "Stairway to Heaven". Using modern technology, video and music, skeptic Shermer shows how we convince ourselves to believe, and how we overlook the facts that are right in front of us.
In the video Why people believe weird things, Shermer clearly debunks every phenomena from people see the Virgin Mary on a cheese sandwich, see virgin Mary in glass window to hearing demonic lyrics in "Stairway to Heaven", by using research techniques to debunk and gain knowledge about the phenom. Shermer uses research techniques such as observing, ask a Questions, Do Background Research, Hypothesis, test, theory, and come to a conclusion. In the hearing demonic lyrics in "Stairway to Heaven", shermer, used a scientific approach were took, an audio device and made it play the music slowly, where he told the audience he was going to play the song backward, and they should be able to hear satanic messages. He proved his test because people in the audience believe they were hearing satanic messages, the people in the audience convinced themselves to believe and overlook the facts that were right in front of them.
I am personally person who is both a skeptic and a believer. I believe that there are things that we can and can’t explain in the world. Things I think we can explain are those on a scientific nature, such as crop circles, and nature forming objects, and etc. The things that don’t think can be explained such as religion, and mental health. I don’t think religion can be explained because it can’t be broken down in science, nor have anyone debunked it. With evolution people have grasp how thing change over time, but when you say that people come from apes, that in possible to grasp to me, because there are still apes on the planet right now. So, religion gives people a different perspective, which man came from man and evolved from man.
Shermers, video, I totally agree with him on all of his cases from the toast with looks like a famous person, nature forming weird objects, the Buick hub cap UFO, can all be explained and debunked easy. In my opinion about the video, is that only someone who is gullible would believe, and by into these debunkable phenoms.
