In the Kauai study, researchers found that one-third of the children in their sample that faced adverse situations managed very well in their lives. Werner and Smith called them the "vulnerable, but invincible". Other children, however, developed serious problems already by the age of 10. The researchers followed these study participants regularly until they had reached the age of 40 and found that many of those had become well-functioning adults.
