Question

A faculty member (principal investigator [PI]) is preparing to submit a protocol to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for an experiment testing a drug for hyperglycemic control on rats. This is PI's first time conducting a study involving animals. She asked a colleague working on a Rat model to share her in the shipping order of rats in order to save money. The PI wants to keep the rats in her laboratory where she conducts all her experiments with human subjects, instead of the department's IACUC- approved animal facility. The experimental methods used in her study could potentially cause short term pain or distress to the rats. However, the investigator believes that this pain is minimal and will not affect the results, so she does not include in her protocol any procedures to minimize the pain or distress.
