Question
Kevin is a 21-year-old male college student who was recently arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance (oxycodone), which was detected when he was stopped for unsafe driving. He was charged with driving while intoxicated. As a result, he was placed on probation and his license was suspended. Kevin is the oldest of three children and lives at home. His mother is an attorney and his father a high school administrator. 16 months prior to his arrest, Kevin was in a car accident that led to a serious but non-fatal injury, which required surgery to repair. After being discharged from the hospital, he was prescribed a 30-day supply of hydrocodone for the pain he'd experience during his recovery. After running out of his prescription, he contacted a friend who managed to get him a steady supply of oxycodone, a stronger opioid. He began taking the pills several times a week, and has continued for over one year. His typical pattern is to take oxy on the weekend, but more recently has been taking it during the week while studying. As a result, he often oversleeps and misses his 8am class. One month ago, Kevin backed his car.
