Limit your submission to digestion, that is ingestion, breakdown, and absorption of food. Further metabolism and hormone secretion are not part of digestion.
Describe the organs of the GI tract and accessory organs starting with the organ responsible for ingesting food and ending with the organ that excrete undigested waste.
Be specific in your description: "digestive juices" is not specific. What chemicals are present in the digestive juice?
For each organ, include:
1. What the stage of digestion takes place in the organ if the organ contributes directly to digestion.
For example, Mouth, mechanical (chewing) and chemical processes (mixing with saliva and the digestive enzymes amylase and lipase produced by the salivary glands) begin the digestion of food.
2. How does that organ contribute to digestion if it is an accessory organ?
For example, no food is digested in either the pancreas or liver, but both organs contribute to digestion. A note about the liver: please limit your description to digestion. The following are examples of activities of the liver which are not part of digestion: detoxify compounds and processes lipids.
3. The secretions and/or enzymes produced by each organ and the function of each chemical the organ secretes (for example, beta-amylase secreted by the pancreas catalyzes the breakdown of starch in the small intestine.)
4. Draw the organs of the digestive tract. This means the organs of the GI tract as well as the 4 accessory organs outlined in chapter 3. (Salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, pancreas) These organs should be drawn showing their connections and in the arrangement of the human body. Once drawn please label each organ. Take a picture or scan and submit it here as well. You can submit a .jpg or .png. No credit will be given for copying a diagram posted on the internet.
