Question 1: Fahad tells his friend Saud that all generators will normally produce alternating induced emf. In DC generator some devices are used to convert AC to DC. Omar disagrees and says that a DC generator does not have any special parts to convert AC to DC.
From your point of view who is correct? Explain in detail how the answer is correct.

Question 2 a) Draw the circuit diagram of an auto transformer. The auto transformer has a voltage ratio 320 V: 280 V and supplies a load of 24 kVA. Assuming an ideal transformer, determine the current in the common winding.
b) How will you find the saving in copper used in an auto transformer compared to that used in an equivalent double-wound transformer? Explain the same with numeric example.

Question 4 a) Explain with neat diagram the type of armature windings that is used for low current, high voltage D.C generator.
b) A DC generator with 12 poles, 868 lap connected armature conductors supplies a load of 14.5 Ω with a terminal voltage of 220V. The generator is running at 785 rpm with armature resistance 0.44 Ω and field resistance 210 Ω. Determine flux per pole.
Question 5 A balanced delta load having a 11 ? resistance in series with an 11 ? capacitive reactance in each leg is connected to a three-phase, three-wire, Star-connected generator having a line voltage of 230
V. Calculate the real power, reactive power, apparent power and power factor. Draw the schematic diagram for the same.
Question 6 In a cement factory, the single-phase, 225 V/1800 V ideal transformer is supplied from a 225 V source to primary winding through a wire having a resistance 3.4?. The resistive load of 2.38 ? is connected across the secondary winding. The primary and secondary resistances are 0.37 ? and 0.04? respectively. Determine (a) total input resistance referred to primary side (b) the primary current flowing (c) secondary current flowing to the load (d) power dissipated in the load resistor.

Question 8 In manah power plant, a 415V, 60Hz 3-phase alternator has a resistance of 36 Ω and inductance of 42mH. Calculate (a) the line current (b) the input power of the alternator. The efficiency of an alternator is given by 83%. The alternator is connected to the three phase three wire load. Neglect the losses when transmitted. Find the current, power factor and circuit constants of the load per phase. Draw the schematic diagram for the same.

Calculate for each connection the readings on each of two wattmeters' connected to measure the power by the two- wattmeter method.
