Advanced structural analysis and design

Assignment 1

Examine the design methods for continuous beams in steel and concrete,

Examine design methods for simple connections for steel structures.

1. Produce a valid design for laterally unrestrained two span steel beam

2. Produce a valid design for doubly reinforced concrete beam

3. Design of bolted steel connections

4. Design of welded steel connection

Assignment 2

1. A steel beam can be idealized as a continuous beam shown in figure 1. The ultimate loading on the beam is also shown and it is also mentioned that the beam is not laterally restrained. ( To check P4.1)

a. Draw the bending moment diagram for the beam using moment distribution method.

b. Assuming the shown load case as the critical load for the beam check the adequacy of a 160x80x8 RHS made out of S275 steel. You should carry out design calculations for Bending, Shear and lateral torsional buckling.

Properties of 160 x 80 x 8 Rectangular Hollow Sections

D = 160 mm

B = 80 mm

t = 8.0 mm

b/t = 7.0

d/t = 17.0

ry = 31.8 mm

Sx = 175 × 103 mm3

Zx = 136 × 103 mm3

A = 3520 mm2

2. A 400mm x 250mm single span reinforced concrete beam is supported on 250mm x 250mm columns at the ends. Due to special loading requirements of the structure the ultimate design load was found to be as high as 64 KN/m on the 5m span beam. The actual structure is shown in figure 2. To give a fire resistance of 2 hours the cover to reinforcement is decided to be 30mm. ( To check P4.2)

a. Idealize the beam to analyze it using simple methods to find the design moment at the middle of the span and calculate the design bending moment at that point.

b. Design the beam for ultimate moment calculated for part a. above as a rectangular beam ( Assume grade 25 concrete)

3. A bolted steel connection is shown in figure 3 below. The steel plates are made of grade S355 steel and bolt belongs to grade 10.9 and 16mm in diameter. The plate thickness is 10mm and 60KN load is acting on each plate. Calculate the following for the bolted connection (Shear area of the bolt is 157mm2) ( To check P5.1)

a. Check the minimum and maximum edge and end distances

b. Check the load carrying capacity of the connection with respect to following.

I. Bolt shear

II. Bolt Bearing

III. Plate Bearing

IV. Block shear

4. There is a requirement to connect a flat steel plate (Grade S355) carrying 100KN load to another same grade steel plate as shown in figure 4. Design a suitable 6mm filet weld assuming electrode classification to be 42. (Assume plate tensile capacity is enough to carry the 100KN load.) ( To check P5.2)
