Second simulation project description
A new lab device is planned to be installed in an office on the same floor slab that a reciprocating engine works. The lab device is very sensitive to vibration and could generate wrong outputs if displacement at the device sensor reaches to a threshold. You are assigned to study effect of vibration produced by the engine on the new device.
Engine specifications.
Mass: 3000 kg.
Frequency of vibration: 0.5 to 10 Hz.
The engine applies cyclic vertical force on the slab.
Device specification:
Device could be structurally modelled as in below figure in which m = 44 kg, I = 12.5 x 106 mm4, A = 2400 mm2, L = 1.3 m, mass per unit length = 19.5 kg/m.

Floor slab
Floor plan is shown below. Slab thickness is 400 mm. Consider column connection to foundation as fixed.

Deliverables:
Use SAP2000 and
a- Consider three damping ratios in the device and draw diagrams for max displacement response of the lump mass (m = 44 kg) in the device versus engine frequency. Draw three diagrams in one single plot.
b- Consider three options of increase in slab thickness underneath the engine and draw diagrams for max displacement response of the lump mass (m = 44 kg) in the device versus engine frequency. Draw three diagrams in one single plot.
c- Submit your results i.e. two sets of diagrams (two plots) as described above along with your SAP2000 model through the link for this assignment in Learn Line.
