You are instructed to draw blood on a patient to confirm a diagnosis. While explaining the procedure to the patient, she states that she will not allow you to draw blood as it is against her religious beliefs. You further explain to the patient that the lab results will provide the information needed to prescribe the best possible treatment, but again she says no. You personally feel very strongly that the patient should follow procedures, but are not able to persuade her. Is this ok? How do you differentiate between personal and professional ethics? What do you do if patient compliance is affecting your job duties?
