8,000 kg/h of concentrated effluent from a microelectronics plant contains 2.50 wt% copper in water. The plant operates a treatment unit that removes 98% of the copper from the effluent. This stream of recovered copper contains no water. The capacity of the treatment unit is 6,000kg/h. Anything above this flow rate bypasses the unit, is mixed with the output from the unit, and then is sent to a separate holding area.
B.1) Draw and label the flowchart and show the degree of freedom analysis for the overall process, the split point, the treatment unit, and the mix point.
B.2) Calculate the flow rate into the holding area and the copper concentration of that stream.
B.3) You want to know what happens to the concentration of the stream going to the holding area if the 8000 kg/h flow rate from the plant is changed. Plot (using a computer) the mass fraction of copper flowing into the separate holding area as a function of plant flow rate for flowrates ranging form 1,000 to 20,000 kg/h.
