The sales process at S&S Electronics (a retail store) is as follows:
When a customer arrives at the store, a sales clerk helps the customer locate the item they are seeking. If the item is found, the sales clerk escorts the customer to the cashier to complete the sale and then returns to the sales floor. If the item is not in inventory, the clerk enters a special order into the computer system which is captured in a special order file located on magnetic disk. The clerk then returns to the sales floor.
When the special order is received, a customer service representative contacts the customer by email. When the customer picks up the order from the store, they come to the customer service desk. The cash receipt process is primarily computerized. The customer service representative rings up the sale on a point-of-sale (POS) computer. The information necessary to determine the sale amount is obtained from an inventory master file located on magnetic disk and is captured in a sales transaction file located on magnetic disk. If the customer pays via credit card, the customer service representative has to swipe the card (assume this is done manually). Otherwise the cash is collected and placed in the cash drawer (hint: the cash is a document and the register is a manual file for purposes of the flowchart and level 0 DFD). A computer generated receipt and the merchandise is then given to the customer.
