Question 1 -

Using the method of superposition, draw a neat labelled Bending Moment Diagram and Shear Force Diagram for the beam member shown in Figure 1, and determine the following:

(i) Bending stresses under maximum positive and negative bending moment;

(ii) Maximum nominal average shear stress;

(iii) Total deflection at the hinge B (theoretical result 0.035mm) and hinge D (theoretical result 3.35mm). Using approximate method only based on Figure 2.4 of your study book. Please clearly indicate your assumptions and comment on the difference between your results and theoretical results. Next year when you study CIV3505 (structural analysis), you will learn more rigorous methods to determine the deflection, such as, Moment -Area Theorems and Conjugate-beam Method.

The beam segments are connected by pins at B and D. Assume that the beam is made of steel (250UB31.4) with E=200 x 103 MPa and is loaded in its strong axis direction.

Question 2 -

(i) Reproduce the diagram of the beam shown in Figure 2, and indicate where you would add conceptual pins to convert this to a corresponding determinate beam to allow approximate analysis of the beam.

(ii) Using approximate analysis, draw a neat and labelled Bending Moment Diagram showing all critical values for the beam member shown in Figure 2. Include all the working.

Question 3 -

A steel roof outline is shown in Figure 3. The roof sheeting will be fixed to steel purlins running along the length of the building (east-west). They will be attached to the top flange of the roof beams Develop line load diagrams showing permanent action (dead load) and imposed action (live load) combination for the following (you need to find out imposed action based on Table 3.2 of AS/NZS 1170.1:2002):

(i) a typical purlin.

(ii) beams RB1 - RB6 (grid 7 and A, B, C) and RB2 - RB6 (grid 1 and A, B, C)

(iii) column IC17.

Roof sheeting self-weight = 4.6 kg/m2; purlin Z15024 self-weight = 5.7kg/m; gyprock ceiling self-weight = 0.13 kN/m2; beams self-weight = 59.7 kg/m (310UB32).
