Each year, over the summer season, New Zealand Tennis (NZT) organises a series of tennis tournaments throughout New Zealand (NZ), each tournament being held at a well-known tennis venue. This series of tournaments is called the NZT Summer Challenge Series. A database is required to store the performance details of tennis players who compete in any tournaments included in the NZT Challenge in any year. Details are to be retained about competitors, the tournaments that are played, and the results achieved by each competitor in each tournament in which he or she competes. Results are required for male and female tennis singles competitions only.

Competitor: details required about competitors are first name, last name, date of birth, address, phone number and gender.

Tournament: details required about tournaments are name of tournament and sponsor. The same named tournament may be held each season, but it is possible that the sponsor may change.

Annual occurrence of a tournament: details required are start date, end date (which both could change each year), prize money, name of the tennis venue (sometimes a venue may hold more than one of the tournaments in the same year), venue location, organiser's first and last names, phone number (the organiser may change over time, and an organiser may also be a competitor). The details of each actual occurrence of a tournament during one season may be added to the database prior to any competitors registering for it. A tournament will only be held once each season. A tournament may be held at different venue in different years.

Competition: each occurrence of a tournament may have male tennis singles and female tennis singles competitions. A competitor must have registered for at least one of these competitions belonging to one occurrence of a tournament. The gender of the competitor must match that of the competition.

Result: competitor's results for each tournament in which he or she has competed must be stored. A result could be described as one of the following: winner, runner-up, semi-finalist, quarter-finalist, round of 16 and round of 32.

Sometimes an occurrence of a tournament depends upon the results of previous tournament occurrences. For example, only competitors competing from three previous specific tournament occurrences could contest in the final Masters Tournament of each season. The details of the prerequisite tournament occurrences must be captured. A tournament occurrence may only be a prerequisite to one other tournament occurrence.
