A person of mass steps off a platform a height h above the ground, keeping their legs straight as they fall. The person bends their knees at the moment their feet touch the ground so that their body moves an additional distance before coming to rest. Calculate the average force exerted by the ground on the person while they are slowing down. Express this force in as a multiple of the person's weight.
(a) Which assumptions do you need to make?
(b) Draw a free body diagram for the person as after they land but before coming to rest.
(c) Use Newton's Laws to determine the force exerted on the person by the ground.
(d) Discuss what would happen if the person doesn't bend their knees when they land.
(e) The average impact force needed to break a human femur is about 27 times the person's weight. If the person is able to bend their knees such that their body moves a maximum of 65 cm, how far could they fall without breaking their femur? (Do not try this at home, or anywhere else for that matter!)
A sphere of radius R is uniformly charged to a total charge of Q. It is made to spin about an axis that passes through its center with an angular speed ω. Find the magnitude of the resulting magnetic field at the center of the sphere.
