A hockey puck at rest on a very smooth icy surface with negligible friction. It is struck with a hockey puck to the right. It speeds up while it is in contact with the stick. As soon as it loses contact with the hockey stick, it keeps moving with little friction. Shortly after that it hits a rougher icy surface which causes it to slow down and then stop.
The three phases are while in contact with the hockey stick, after losing contact with the stick, and hitting the rough patch and stopping
Draw a FBD for the puck for each phase of the motion. Use p for puck, i for ice, s for stick, e for Earth.
Show a frame of reference on each FBD and indicate the direction of acceleration on the diagram. If there is no acceleration, Write Newton's second law in vector and algebraic form for each phase right under the FBD. Vector form has arrows and no negatives and algebraic form has +/- signs depending on the frame of reference and no arrows.
