Many students think that a writer must have had a dramatic experience in order to write an interesting and informative literacy narrative. Although a unique and unforgettable experience could be the source of a gripping story, most successful literacy narratives reflect meaningfully on an ordinary experience that has some extraordinary meaning for the writer. What makes a narrative interesting and informative is the writer's craft in telling the story and the individual's willingness to reflect on the story's larger significance.

Prompts for Planning:

Think about a place--from your childhood, from now--that you like to go to either read or write. Write five sentences that start with "I remember..." that focus only on description, using the five senses. What do you like to wear, eat, fiddle with, etc. while you complete these tasks?

Which object or sensory experience stands out as odd or worthy of exploration? Write a paragraph in which you try to figure out why that object or sensory experience is/was important to your reading or writing. What does that object or sensory experience mean for your reading or writing?
