Case: Now, take notes, outline, and start writing your research paper.
For the Final Draft of the research paper, you must follow the requirements below:
1 You must have an argumentative thesis which will be underlined. Points off for not doing so. Remember that an argumentative essay is a defensive essay. It means that you have to defend something that some intellectuals are against.
2 You must cite according to MLA; points will take off for incorrect citing.
3 You must have the correct sources and the correct number of sources.
4 Many of you have never written a research paper. I recommend reading the paper on page 75 of Lessons in Writing. I recommend reading the sample paper at OWL Purdue: Sample MLA paper (Granted, the topic might be dry, but the style, structure, and the formatting will lead you in the right direction.
5 Check out the advice at this website: "How to Write a Research Paper"Links to an external site.
A first draft will get points based on the amount of effort you have shown for the first draft. But I suggest handing in something. Something is better than nothing for a first draft.
You should study the rubric so that you can get a good grade.
1 As much as 75 points will be taken off if the thesis is not argumentative.
2 15 points will be taken off if the thesis is not underlined.
3 As much as 30 points will be taken off if there are ANY grammar, spelling, or punctuation mistakes in the thesis.
4 One (3) point will be taken off for every MLA error in the paper and on the Works Cited page.
5 One half (2) point will taken off for every grammar, spelling, or punctuation error.
6 The paper will be given a zero (0) if there is ANY plagiarism.
7 Of course, points are taken off for other mistakes like unsound reasoning, inaccurate "facts," sources not cited, awkward wording, etc.
Canvas will put your paper through Turnitin.com. My suggestion: Do your own work, do your best, and be precise.
As stated before, points will be taken off for each day the paper is late. (If it is too late, then I will not accept it, and you will not pass.)
Coming to the Zoom meetings for class will help for this part of the essay.
We must become familiar with the school databases which are found in the Library website.
This argumentative essay must use articles from periodicals from the databases (not websites on the World Wide Web), and those articles MUST be cited according to MLA.
The video below might help you find the databases. I picked Issues and Controversies, but you can choose any appropriate database. (What would be an inappropriate database? Well, Films on Demand does not share ARTICLES. Databases for encyclopedias do not have articles from periodicals which we need to use. Databases that have eBooks do not have articles from periodicals which we need to use.)
