From the police brutality of those individuals trying to receive the same un-alienable rights during the Civil Rights Movement, to the issues we face today sparking internal police investigation with the killing of Trayvon Martin, Keith Lamont Scott, and many others, it has become one of the most polarized social issue in the past two years. I look forward to your selections and discussion. Below is a list of some current issues and controversies, in addition to a few journal articles you might find interesting. They include healthcare, education, and police brutality. Remember, for an issue to be viewed as a social problem (issue or controversy), there must be public outcry, there must be widespread discussions, the issue must run contrary to society’s ideas, a large section of our population must view it as a social problem, and there must be ways in which society is addressing the problem. Let’s look at the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for a moment. Over the course of the past several years, it has not only become a social issue, but is plagued with controversy, which includes, who does it help, how, is it affordable, and so on. In addition to the ACA, education is a social issue plagued with controversy, especially within the inner city. For example, there has been an increase in violence within most inner-city schools. As a result, many have implemented certain policies, which include metal detectors. The question becomes does it help or hinder a safe academic environment? You be the judge!!! Now, let’s take a quick look at police brutality.

Below is the lesson thread. This week, we are discussing current issues, research trends, and controversies in sociology. In order to become familiar with current research trends, browse through a recent issue of a sociology journal (it may be related to the sub-field you addressed in Week 2). I recommend searching the JSTOR database available via the APUS Library and reading a few articles that catch your interest. Based on the journal and articles you have browsed (and any other searches that you feel compelled to run), you will write a brief description of some of the current topics/ controversies in this particular sub-field and explain why you picked these particular examples. As you have learned throughout your academic journey, there are various controversies in relation to social issues. Ask yourself, what are some wrongs or problems you note that have taken place within our society? Think back to your social problems class.

Browse through a recent issue of a sociology journal. I recommend searching the JSTOR database available via the APUS Library and reading a few articles that focus on one of your peers'' topics (different topic). In addition to this journal article, please select one from the lesson. Based on the two journal articles (one you obtained and one from the lesson thread), within at least 250 words, describe the two current topics/controversies and explain why you selected these particular examples, e.g., Health Disparities; Minorities and Health Outcomes. As a sociologist, how might you address both issues? *My peer''s topic I would like this assignment to discuss is domestic violence*
