Remember, for an issue to be viewed as a social problem (issue or controversy), there must be public outcry, there must be widespread discussions, the issue must run contrary to society’s ideas, a large section of our population must view it as a social problem, and there must be ways in which society is addressing the problem. Let’s look at the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for a moment. Over the course of the past several years, it has not only become a social issue, but is plagued with controversy, which includes, who does it help, how, is it affordable, and so on. In addition to the ACA, education is a social issue plagued with controversy, especially within the inner city. For example, there has been an increase in violence within most inner-city schools. As a result, many have implemented certain policies, which include metal detectors. The question becomes does it help or hinder a safe academic environment? You be the judge!!! Now, let’s take a quick look at police brutality.

In order to become familiar with current research trends, browse through a recent issue of a sociology journal (it may be related to the sub-field you addressed in Week 2).
