Carp are freshwater fish that thrive in stagnant-water habitats. The partial pressure of oxygen in stagnant water is low compared to moving water. Compared to the hemoglobin of many other fish species, carp hemoglobin has a very high affinity for oxygen; carp hemoglobin binds very strongly to oxygen molecules.
