Christopher Columbus in Hispaniola
This chapter explores fictionalized conversation between Spanish monarch King Ferdinand and a nobleman named Don Hernan Ocampo, about investigations in Spain into the conduct of Christopher Columbus and his heirs in Hispaniola. King Ferdinand asks his Ocampo, his old friend, to go to the island of Hispaniola on the king's behalf to ascertain the truth about Columbus and his brothers and heirs. As a fictional investigation, the narrative is able to present evidence in favor of Columbus, as well as that evidence which left him in a less than positive light. From the contrasting evidence emerges a portrait of a flawed yet complex man.
