In Shakespeare's Sonnet 18, he starts by using a traditional sonnet form. It seems appropriate to use a poetic form to write about depression. Then he almost tells a story where he starts off with everything going bad, then he flips the story to have a happy ending.
Emily Dickinson's poem goes super-dark to describe depression. She structures her poem to talk about what depression isn't, which feels like she might be going to a positive place, then goes even more sad...ending her poem with the word despair.
And in Adventures in Depression, the author uses weird drawings to find humor in a subject that isn't very funny. This is a definite choice. Does it work? Is the text more engaging or less? Does this make it effective or make fun of the subject of depression?
