Question 1: Although many (but not all) Filipinos resisted American involvement and control, do you think that the U.S. was justified in its actions because of the positive benefits that resulted? (There were Filipinos who welcomed U.S. because it gave them access to jobs, education, health care, even local political power)

Question 2: Pro-Imperialist Americans argued that had the Philippines been granted independence, they would have become prey to other more threatening imperial powers (such as German or Japan), and that US control also guaranteed Philippine protection. Does this justify US actions? Could the Philippines have defended themselves against other imperial powers, without US protection?

Question 3: Today, the United States continues its mission to spread democracy around the world, although in a less direct manner than was the case in the Philippines. In modern cases of regimes who engage in undemocratic, repressive policies, or even human rights violations, (countries such as Iran, Syria or North Korea) do you believe that America has an obligation or right to intervene to promote democracy?
