Topic: Heroin

Look for at least 3 sources, one of them Peer Reviewed Journal source

The opening paragraph should address "why" you selected the particular drug.

What is the history of the drug? Your history should include whether the drug is lab created or a naturally occurring plant. How is the "drug" created? Is it processed in some way? How has it been used "historically." When was it first used, by whom, in what way. Was it developed to replace another drug? Was it ever legal? When did it become illegal to use the drug? Talk about any legislation or laws that have changed the status of the drug.

Does the drug have any medical uses-explain. What are the medical uses? Have the uses changed over the years?

How dangerous is the drug? Is it addictive? Immediately? Over time? Any information on prevalence of addiction? (What portion of the population eventually becomes addicted). Are there additional chemicals added in the processing that enhance the dangerous nature of the drug? Is the process of creation dangerous too? Are there statistics that link this drug to an increase in crime related to its use? Are there statistics that indicate the number of overdoses that may have occurred from use? Are there statistics regarding levels or prevalence of use among certain populations? Does use of the drug impact brain development? Find some research articles that address addictiveness or anything that concerns what makes the drug dangerous.

If the drug is a controlled substance, what is the assigned level of control under the Statute. Do you agree with the level of control presently assigned? Please explain your answer. Remember that the Controlled Substance classifications are based first upon whether or not the drug has any medical use, and second upon how addictive the drug is. If a particular drug is NOT a controlled substance, is it legal to use? If it is legal, are there any laws restricting how or when the drug can be used?

Include some information about the impact of the drug on the body. Is the drug a stimulant? A depressant? A hallucinogen? What neurotransmitter is impacted by the drug? (Serotonin; dopamine; GABA; etc.) What is the impact of the drug on the brain.

Talk about treatment for the particular drug. Is there anything unique about the particular drug? (Does it require detox? Is there a particular type of treatment that seems to be more effective for the particular type of drug?) Look for research that talks about particular types of treatment for the particular drug. You may find information about how certain types of treatment are better for particular populations.
