Question 1. Title and Introduction: Is the title appropriately linked to the paper's content? Does the title catch the reader's interest? Does the introductory paragraph hook the reader's interest and prepare the reader for what is to come?

Question 2. Does the beginning of the paper include a definition of some key concept? Does the body of the paper refine the definition of this key concept?

Question 3. Thesis and purpose: Does the paper begin with an orienting thesis that must be defended by an argument? Does the thesis make a judgment concerning the paper's key concept, identifying it as a positive thing, a negative thing, or a thing with both positive and negative qualities? Briefly summarize the paper's thesis statement.

Question 4. The Supporting Points: When the paper makes claims, are they sufficiently supported by explanations and examples? List the kinds of evidence used to support the writer's argument. Which claims have the strongest support? What claims could be supported more fully? What claims could have been deemphasized or left out?

Question 5. Documentation: Does the paper have the appropriate number of parenthetical references? Does it seem as if all points that are not common knowledge are documented with parenthetical references?

Question 6. Organization: Does the progression of ideas in the paper seem understandable? Could the main points of the paper be presented in a more effective way?

Question 7. Word choice: Underline words that do not fit the context. Circle words that are particularly effective in context.

Question 8. Conclusion: Does the draft end appropriately by leaving the reader with food for further thought? Does the conclusion merely restate the introduction? After reading the paper, do you agree or disagree with the writer's position? Why or why not?
