For this forum you will be analyzing current advertisements (think: t.v. commercials or any other ads you come across) to see how they portray socialization through the life course. They need to be advertisements that are CURRENTLY used.
Compare two current t.v. commercials and explain the following:
1. Provide a very brief description of the commercial
2. Explain how it portrays a specific stage in the life course and what is expected of people in that age group. For example, if the commercial focuses on children, how does is it portray what "childhood" should be like? What are the expectations we have for children? Or if it's about the older years, how does it portray what is expected from the "elderly?"
3. Does the commercial show any agents of socialization? For example, are the children being shown at home with their family, at school, or playing sports with their peer group? Are they learning anything specific (being socialized) through their interactions with this agent of socialization?
4. Does the commercial show examples of socialization into gender? For example, are boys and/or girls being shown that particular expectations exist for their gender group?
5. If you find your commercials online, please provide a link so we can view them too.
