Question: Spring Valley Farms, Inc. supplied poultry feed to farmers who raised broiler and egg-laying poultry. Sarah F. Jones had the title of feed delivery manager with the company in Cullman, Alabama, and she dispatched the drivers who delivered the feed. Drivers could earn more money on "long hauls" (more than fifty miles from the mill) than on "short hauls." Therefore, Spring Valley Farms instructed Jones to "equalize" the number of long and short hauls so that all drivers would earn approximately the same wages. The company also instructed her to work the drivers as close to forty hours per week as possible and then to "knock them off" by seniority.
