Topic: Communication Event. You have your choice between two persuasive speeches.

After watching one of these speeches, you will write an essay applying Aristotle's Proofs to the content and delivery of the speech.

Your essay should have a brief introduction paragraph.

Then, your essay should have three sections: ethos, pathos, and logos. Your job is to analyze the speech for speaker credibility, use of emotion, and use of reason.

For the sections on pathos and logos, there are basically two choices to write about:

The speech contains pathos (separate section for logos.) Here are examples of the pathos (logos) used. Here is how we know it is pathos (logos). An evaluation about the pathos (logos) being effective or not and why.

The speech does not contain pathos (separate section for logos.) Does the lack of pathos (logos) hurt the speech or help it? Why would the speaker make a choice not to include pathos (logos)?

You will not be able to include every instance of logos and pathos in your essay. Be discerning! Be choosy!

For the section on ethos, there are basically two things to write about:

Evidence of the speaker's character, competence, and/or goodwill. Writing specifically about initial, derived and terminal credibility would go here too. Does the speaker have positive ethos in these areas or negative? How do you know?

Lack of evidence of the speaker's character, competence, and/or goodwill. Writing specifically about where there should have been initial, derived and terminal credibility would go here too. What could the speaker say or do that would give them positive ethos in these areas? Explain.

Your essay should have a brief concluding paragraph. In it, give your overall impression and evaluation of the speaker and the speech. Make sure your evaluation is connected to your analysis (in other words, don't write "no logos, no pathos, bad ethos, but a great speech.")
