A ceramic part for a jet engine has a tensile strength of 520 MPa and a fracture toughness of 5.5 MPa.m1/2. To be sure that the part does not fail, we plan to ensure that the maximum applied stress is only one third of the tensile strength. We use a non-destructive test that will detect any internal flaws greater than 1.25 mm long. Assuming that Y = 1.4, does our non-destructive test have the required sensitivity? Explain.
