Problem

Ethical theories examine multiple aspects of decision-making. three spheres of decision-making are examined here when considering efficacy: motives, actions and consequences through lenses of teleological or deontological reasoning.

Teleological reasoning (from the Greek word 'telos' meaning goal or end) assumes the 'morality' of an act(ion) is based on the potential outcome - that is, I am going to base my decision to act or not act on the prospective outcome or consequence of my action or inaction.

Deontological theories (from the Greek word 'deon' meaning duty) suggest actions or decisions can be right or wrong regardless of the consequence or outcome of the act.

An important question arises out of either theoretic position: does my action support the greater good and what is the definition of or my understanding of what the greater good consists of?
