Assignment:
Editing a Title and Abstract
For this learning activity, you will be editing the abstract for the article "Does human pedestrian behaviour influence risk assessment in a successful mammal urban adapter." You will also propose a new title. This article, which was published in 2014 in the Journal of Zoology, has become infamous as an example of unnecessarily complex, abstract, and verbose academic writing.
Although a good abstract should make sense on its own, in this case you may need to read the five-page article (provided as a PDF) by Bateman and Fleming before you begin editing. If you are still puzzled about what the authors are trying to say, read the somewhat tongue-in-cheek blog post by Jerry Coyne, professor of ecology and evolution at the University of Chicago.
Be sure to read the course notes (especially the discussion of titles and abstracts) and view the short presentation on writing scientific abstracts on Purdue Owl.
The article has been slightly changed for the purposes of this learning activity and accompanying assignment. Please edit the version attached, and continue working on the same file for the assignment.
You may edit the abstract using Track Changes, or you may rewrite it. If you rewrite it, do not use Track Changes. Post your revised title and abstract directly in the forum or as a Word attachment on or before the date given in the Timeline. If you post a Word document, be sure to label it with your name.
