Does express checkout make sense? In a supermarket, there are two checkout lanes with independent lines and one cashier each. An average of 30 customers per hour wanting to check out are evenly split between the two lanes (15 cust./h each line). The average service time is 3 minutes per customer. To improve efficiency, the manager conducted an experiment where customers with 10 items or less were sent to one specific line henceforth called the “express line” and the rest to the other line. In this situation, the express line received 60% of the customers while the other line received the rest. The express line could reduce the service time to 1 min per customer, while the other had a slower service time of 4 min per customer. From the point of view of number of customers waiting in line in the supermarket, does it make sense to use the express checkout lane? Justify with calculations and a proper explanation.
