Read section 2.1 in the OER "2.1. Dark or Hidden Figure of Crime" beginning on p. 69. Read the FBI's "Offenses Cleared" document. Also, refer to the FBI Offenses Cleared.

1. Out of all the crimes committed in the United States, which crime do you think we have the most accurate data? Do we have more accurate data on the most serious crimes or the least serious crimes? Explain your answer.
2. Does the "dark figure of crime" refer to crimes that go unreported or crimes that go unsolved? Which crimes are more likely to go unsolved, more serious crimes, or less serious crimes? Explain your answer.
3. What does "cleared" mean? What are the different methods of clearing a case? Offenses Cleared.
4. Using the FBI data, are more serious crimes like murder, assault, robbery, and rape more difficult to solve than less serious crimes like burglary and theft? What crime has the highest solvability rate? Explain why you think some crimes are easier to solve than others? Be specific.
