Assignment:

I think a study by Su and Wang (2012) brings up a good point in terms of generational differences in immigrant populations. We know that immigrants and their children who may have been born in the country of residence often have different cultural norms and ideologies (Su & Wang, 2012). The question then becomes how much of an impact does the larger culture have on first generation children born in a country different from their parents? Does this then change the personality of the first generation children? We also see this in age cohorts where certain age groups tend to have certain characteristics.

For example, when I was younger there were no cell phones and I had a black and white TV until I was 14. However, my children have technology and access to a wide range of media. My children have similar traits, but they are impacted by things in the world that I was never exposed to at their age. In this case example how do you think exposure to differing cultural values as a first generation versus an immigrant contribute to understand between generations within groups?
