Nearly nine out of ten police officers are male. Several explanations have been offered for the relatively low percentage of female police officers. One is that police departments continue to discriminate against women. Another is that not many women are drawn to a career in law enforcement for a variety of reasons, including its male-dominated culture. Yet another explanation is that many female candidates do not perform as well as men at certain stages of the hiring process (e.g., in physical tests of upper-body strength).
