Assignment:

We are looking at the related themes of pilgrimmage, trade, & travel. Much of the discourse on these topics in Asia is focused on the so-called Silk Road, which has recently become increasingly referred to as the Silk Roads to better reflect the realities of a complex trade and travel network. Some sample questions to respond to if you so choose:

a) Do you see a clear historical point where a Silk Road begins to exist, or do you think east-west movement across Asia was always common?

b) What role do you think the development of new religions in the Iron Age played in enabling movement?

c) Does one particular motivation for movement seem to have been more important than others (i.e. trade, pilgrimage, warfare, etc.)? Do different motivations to travel lead to different archaeological outcomes from what you've seen and read so far?
