Discussion 1
Two (2) junior staff have a disagreement over the supervision and interacting of children in the sandpit area. One (1) staff member does not like supervising the sandpit because they get sand in their shoes. The other staff member prefers not to supervise the sand pit because most of the children from her room play around the climbing fort. The lead educator in the playground at the time makes a decision and says they both must supervise and interact with the children who are playing in the sandpit, regardless of the age of the children or what room they come from. She further explains that this is best practice in ensuring quality programming and also developing positive meaningful relationships with the children.
She further explains the carer who does not like sand in her shoes can take her shoes off when supervising the sandpit, as long as they are replaced when getting out. Furthermore, she says they both must supervise the sandpit every afternoon so that the other staff can engage with the children with the other activities.
Do you agree with the decision made by the lead educator? What other ways could she have handled the disagreement?
Discussion 2
A parent approaches you, the Educator, and discusses the fact that they are finding it hard to put their child, who is 2.5 years, to sleep at night and want to know if the child's day sleep should be stopped.
You know that the child is always tired around the middle of the day because they are so active. The parent is quite anxious about the night time bed routine.
Discuss below one point that you may raise with this parent. Do you think the child should be kept awake at care? Explain why.
