Question: Two of the three articles explore the intriguing concept that the city-state and networks of cities might make an unexpected comeback in the twenty-first century due to economic globalization combined with the modern communications revolution, and, could possibly even rival sovereign states as the dominant form of meta-polity in the world one day. The other article looks at Singapore, as a successful city state in reality. Could a loose network of Montreal, Boston, New York, Dublin and London one day have more in common with each other than the hinterlands and countries of which they are currently technically part? Do you think that city state networks could re-emerge, and, if they do, could they end up rivalling the current shape and nature of the sovereign state in the international system? Is Singapore really an ideal example of a successful, independent, city state?
