How would you describe the full range of Nixon's motives for Watergate?
How do you make sense of Attorney General John Mitchell, the chief law enforcement officer of the federal government, aiding and abetting in the planning of Watergate and its cover-up? Since both presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis have already announced plans to put the Department of Justice and the FBI more under the control of the elected president and less as neutral arms of the law, what lessons might be learned from Watergate about presidential power overreach that may apply to the immediate future?
If Butterfield had not mentioned the taping system, do you think Nixon would have gotten away with this "crime against democracy?"
In 1974 there was a bipartisan consensus that Nixon's obstruction of justice was serious enough that he should be impeached, convicted and removed from office as unfit to govern. Instead he resigned. Donald Trump was impeached twice but not convicted either time and now he is facing two massive indictments. No president has attempted to pardon himself so this is untested legal territory. In the event Donald Trump evades sufficiently the most serious consequences of various legal prosecutions, becomes the Republican nominee for president and duly wins back the White House in 2024 and then pardons himself of all wrongdoing and the Democrats control both the House and the Senate, should they impeach (House) and convict (Senate) Donald Trump of "high crimes and misdemeanors," as the Constitution puts it, and remove him from public office once and for all or not? If so, on what grounds?
