Question: Recently Jody, a 15-year-old, has not been acting like herself. She used to hang out with her friends after school; now when she comes home, she goes straight to her bedroom or stares at the television for hours. Jody was a very good student; however, her teachers report that she does not turn in assignments on time and her test scores are dropping. When asked about this, Jody responds, "I don't care. What's the point of it all?" When her friends call, she does not want to talk with them. She was active in her church youth group, but now is not interested in participating in those activities. She seems tired and listless and has lost noticeable weight. When her parents try to talk to her about what is wrong or how she feels, she gets irritable and snaps at them. She seems angry with them for expressing concern. Jody states, "I can't do anything right. Everything is hopeless and I'm worthless. Why bother?"
